Specialist General Surgeon – Whakatane

As a General Surgeon and part of the multidisciplinary team, to provide efficient, cost-effective, high-quality investigation and treatment services to a standard comparable with that of
competent colleagues, to the community served by Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty.

The General Surgeon is required to undertake their clinical responsibilities and to conduct themselves in all matters relating to their employment, in accordance with best practice and relevant ethical and professional standards and guidelines, as determined from time to time by:

• The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and relevant professional associations;
• The New Zealand Medical Association’s code of ethics;
• The New Zealand Medical Council;
• The Health and Disability Commissioner; and
• Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty policies and procedures.

The General Surgeon role includes the facilitation of clinical guidance and instruction for others within the surgical service relating to medical matters and to assist in the instruction,
monitoring and advising of Junior Medical Officers employed by Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty.

An opportunity exists for a full time Specialist General Surgeon to join the General Surgery team at Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty.  This position is based at Whakatāne Hospital with a commitment to supporting services across the Bay of Plenty.

Whakatāne Hospital provides comprehensive acute and planned (elective) surgical services to the Bay of Plenty population. You will work within a team of four General Surgeons, supported by a Surgical MOSS and two Surgical Registrars, including a SET Registrar, in a collegial and well-supported regional service.

Clinical – Senior Medical Officers, Medical Officers and Fellows – General Surgery

We are looking for a specialist who would like an opportunity to work with the team, as a generalist and within their subspecialty, while also providing acute and planned care services, teaching, mentoring junior teams, as well as undertaking administrative responsibilities. A special interest in breast and thyroid surgery is desirable as is competency in endoscopy.  This position includes participating equally in the after-hours roster.
