Description

The general surgery department in the Wairarapa is hiring for a full-time general surgeon with breast surgery specialty interest, either ongoing or with the possibility for fixed-term appointment per applicant preference.

About the Role

We are a collaborative, collegial department of 3 full-time and 2 part-time surgeons, job-sized for 5 FTE overall, supported by one non-training registrar and 2 house officers. Despite our small size, we are well-supported regionally and maintain a robust practice of:

  • Breast cancer surgery: including Savi scout wireless localization, ICG plus standard isotope sentinel lymph node biopsy with Arthrex Exo Scope visualisation system, Faxitron intraoperative specimen XR
  • Upper and lower endoscopy: including Bowel Screening, advanced polypectomy, and dilation, with dedicated endoscopy suite business case approved and expected completion 2028
  • Laparoscopic-focused general surgery: including colectomy, para-oesophageal hernia repair, inguinal and abdominal wall hernia repair
  • And all the rest: level 4 trauma centre, acute and elective bread and butter general surgery, and acute basic urology and ENT

To maintain this range of skills amongst the group, we are extremely collaborative and supportive, including shared surgical planning and post-operative care, co-operating for complex or challenging cases, and availability for backup on-call support for difficult or high-risk acute cases.

We would welcome an early-career surgeon or recent graduate who is interested in a supportive environment to build their practice and solidify their general surgical skills and independence.

About the Location

The Wairarapa is a robust and growing region with easy access to the mountains and the sea, excellent schools, affordable housing options, and a range of cultural interests. Situated roughly 2 hours from Wellington and Palmerston North, Masterton offers an excellent work/life balance with immediate availability of city experiences.

We are firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and are dedicated to serving our whole community. We embrace a workforce that is diverse and inclusive, and welcome applications from all walks of life, including our Māori, Pacific, disabled, and rainbow communities.

Requirements

We are seeking an applicant who is:

  • A team player and good communicator
  • Keen on teaching, both to juniors and to peers
  • Committed to staying up to date with research and practising evidence-based medicine
  • Interested in a collaborative environment with frequent collegial interaction and discussion
  • Currently maintaining breast cancer skills and interest, especially regarding use of latest technologies as above
  • Either currently practicing endoscopy or with an interest and ability to reskill in endoscopy
