This is detailed in the Constitution of the NZAGS. In nominating members of the Executive Committee (see the list below), the Association should encourage those who have relevant skills and experience to contribute at this level.
Responsibilities
The Executive Committee has overall responsibility for the activities and affairs of the Association, which in practice is achieved through delegation to the Executive Director, and the Standing Committees of the Association.
The Executive Committee has reserved responsibility for the overall direction of the affairs and activities of the Association, as well as other duties.
Specifically, the Executive Committee is responsible for:
- Setting appropriate frameworks of governance and oversight of the Association;
- Approving the strategic plan, operating budget, and capital expenditure each year;
- Promoting ethical and responsible decision-making;
- Ensuring the appropriate governance structures are in place;
- Promoting the success of the Association in a manner designed to create and build sustainable value for members;
- Effectively utilising and respecting of the experienced professional advice available within the Association in making decisions that have a material effect on the Association; and
- Forwarding recommendations for the appointment of auditors, the appointment of the Association solicitor, and the adoption of annual accounts to a General Meeting of the Association on an annual basis.

NZAGS Committee Nominations
All vacancies are addressed in December each year. If and when a vacancy arises, nominations will be sought from the membership.
Aotearoa New Zealand Committee in General Surgery (AoNZCIGS)
AoNZCIGS is responsible for the governance and delivery of the General Surgery Education and Training (GSET) Programme in Aotearoa New Zealand. It advises the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) on training and accreditation matters and ensures that the GSET programme meets national standards. AoNZCIGS oversees policies, clinical training requirements, curriculum development, hospital accreditation, trainee assessment frameworks, and progression processes for all General Surgery trainees in New Zealand.

Aotearoa New Zealand Training Sub‑Committee (AoNZTSC)
The AoNZTSC is a subcommittee of AoNZCIGS and is responsible for the day‑to‑day management of General Surgery trainees. It handles trainee placements, training post allocations, assessment reviews, research approvals, trainee requests, performance management, and eligibility decisions related to progression and the Fellowship Examination. AoNZTSC works closely with Hospital Supervisors and NZAGS to ensure trainees receive appropriate support, structured training, and consistent oversight throughout the GSET programme.
NZAGS has a formal Constitution and is governed by an elected Chair and Executive Committee. Changes to the Constitution must be approved by a majority vote at an ASM.
