Pattern Background

Executive Committee

NZAGS has a formal Constitution and is governed by an elected Chair and Executive Committee. Changes to the Constitution must be approved by a majority vote at an ASM.

The NZAGS Executive Committee provides leadership, governance and strategic direction for the Association. Our Committee brings together surgeons from across Aotearoa New Zealand who contribute their experience, insight and time to support the profession and ensure the needs of general surgeons and trainees are represented at a national level.

The Committee oversees key areas of NZAGS activity, including training and education, advocacy, workforce issues, member engagement and organisational governance. Members work collaboratively with partners across the health sector, including RACS, Te Whatu Ora, private providers and national agencies, to support safe, sustainable and equitable surgical services.

Our Executive Committee reflects the breadth and diversity of General Surgery in New Zealand. Each member brings a commitment to professional standards, high‑quality care and the ongoing development of our specialty. Together, they help guide the direction of NZAGS and strengthen the voice of general surgeons across the motu.

NZAGS Executive Committee

The Executive Committee has responsibilities for the overall direction of the activities and affairs of the Association and shall work to enhance and promote the interests of the Association and its current and future members.

This is detailed in the Constitution of the NZAGS. In nominating members of the Executive Committee (see the list below), the Association should encourage those who have relevant skills and experience to contribute at this level.

Responsibilities

The Executive Committee has overall responsibility for the activities and affairs of the Association, which in practice is achieved through delegation to the Executive Director, and the Standing Committees of the Association.

The Executive Committee has reserved responsibility for the overall direction of the affairs and activities of the Association, as well as other duties.

Executive Committee

Specifically, the Executive Committee is responsible for:

  • Setting appropriate frameworks of governance and oversight of the Association;
  • Approving the strategic plan, operating budget, and capital expenditure each year;
  • Promoting ethical and responsible decision-making;
  • Ensuring the appropriate governance structures are in place;
  • Promoting the success of the Association in a manner designed to create and build sustainable value for members;
  • Effectively utilising and respecting of the experienced professional advice available within the Association in making decisions that have a material effect on the Association; and
  • Forwarding recommendations for the appointment of auditors, the appointment of the Association solicitor, and the adoption of annual accounts to a General Meeting of the Association on an annual basis.

Please ensure you familiarise yourself with the Executive Committee Charter.

Call for Nominations to the New Zealand Association of General Surgeons Executive

Are you passionate about advancing General Surgery in New Zealand? Would you like to play a crucial role in shaping the future of our profession?

The New Zealand Association of General Surgeons (NZAGS) is seeking nominations for our Executive Committee, with terms beginning 21 March 2026.

Early December a call will go out to members regarding any Executive Committee vacancies for the coming year, and nominations are now being sought for three positions beginning 30 March 2025.

The Executive Committee has four meetings per year, comprising one face to face meeting immediately prior to the ASM in March/April, and three quarterly online meetings. In addition, there is often correspondence that gets distributed for feedback between meetings.

Nominations will be voted on by members at the Association’s Annual General Meeting.

You may nominate a member from your department (with permission), or yourself if you would like to become involved, by using the NZAGS Nomination Form 2026.
