Kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role

We are looking for an applicant who has either completed their general surgical training or will complete their training in 2024 to achieve FRACS. The fellowship will allow the successful applicant to gain further experience as an independent specialist. Teaching and supervision of Resident Medical Officers (RMO) is an important part of the role.

The fellow acts as the first-on consultant on-call backed up by another Senior Medical Officer (SMO) 1:6.

Mō tō mātou rōpū – About our team

We are pleased to offer a fellowship in breast or endocrine surgery. The successful applicant will be able to tailor the experience to their learning goals working with either service to the extent that suits them best.

The oncoplastic breast surgery team comprises of 2 oncoplastic surgeons, 1 breast surgeon, a breast physician, a breast nurse practitioner, and breast care nurses. The service manages patients with both benign and malignant disease. The fellow will work independently and with supervision to support work in the operating theatre, and clinic setting. There is good exposure to therapeutic mammoplasty, chest wall perforator flaps and nipple/skin sparing mastectomy with implant based reconstruction as well as consolidating experience with level 1 oncoplastic techniques.

The endocrine surgery team is the regional unit for thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery. The unit is high volume for operative endocrine surgery and the fellow will gain experience with benign and malignant endocrine surgery disease including lateral neck surgery and minimally invasive approaches to the adrenal and parathyroid glands. Our 3 consultants work closely with the endocrinology service locally and regional surgeons and endocrinologists. We run regular MDMs for malignant and benign endocrine surgery disease and weekly journal clubs/dynamic testing meetings with the endocrinologists. The fellow will work with all of the surgeons and integrate into the wider endocrine service.

The combined service is supported by 1 general surgery trainee, 2 non-training registrars, and a house surgeon.

Participation in the department Audit programme is a requirement.  The wider general surgical department covers all the general surgery sub-specialities.

The fellow will obtain training in endocrine and breast surgery depending on their preference and will provide a general surgery service commitment to the unit.
